A classic English Knole style two seater sofa upholstered in gold ribbed velvet, finished with decorative brass studding, bullion fringe and tasselled cords. Originating in England during the 17th century, the Knole sofa takes its name from Knole House in Kent, where an original example dating to around 1640 remains. Originally conceived as a formal seat for royalty and aristocracy, the design is distinguished by its high back and adjustable sides. The hinged arms can be lowered independently or secured upright using decorative cords looped around brass finials, allowing the sofa to be arranged for upright seating or more relaxed lounging. This vintage example features two removable seat cushions, generous proportions and traditional upholstery detailing throughout. Finished with gold bullion fringe along the base and decorative tassels at each corner. Vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use, including some fading and wear to the velvet upholstery and minor wear to the fringe and trim. Overall in excellent condition.
