Large vintage Chinese eight panel folding screen, finished in black lacquer and decorated to both sides with two completely different hand painted scenes. One side features a gilt ground with a continuous garden scene centred by peacocks, surrounded by flowering branches, peonies, bamboo and smaller birds. The black border is finished with decorative bird motifs. The reverse has a black lacquer ground with a contrasting water garden scene of lotus flowers and leaves, cranes, smaller birds and trailing willow. Each of the eight panels is joined with metal hinges and finished with brass capped feet, allowing the screen to be displayed fully extended or folded to suit the space. A highly decorative double sided screen with two distinct compositions, suitable as a room divider, behind a bed or sofa, or displayed more flat as a wall feature. Vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use, including rubbing, scratches, small chips and losses to the lacquer and decoration, particularly around the edges and upper corners. Wear and tarnishing to the hinges and brass feet. Please refer to photographs.
