A beautifully proportioned oversized framed reproduction of Garçon sur les rochers (Boy on the Rocks), originally painted between 1895 and 1897 by celebrated French artist Henri Rousseau (1844–1910). One of Rousseau's most intriguing compositions, the painting depicts a young boy perched upon a landscape of jagged rocks, dressed in a dark coat and striped stockings against a soft blue sky. The unusual proportions, simplified forms and dreamlike quality are characteristic of Rousseau's distinctive Naïve style, which became an important influence on modern art. The artwork is housed in a decorative gilt frame with fine classical moulded detailing, complementing the painting's muted tones and unusual subject matter. Its generous scale makes it particularly suited to an entrance hall, drawing room or above a mantelpiece. The original painting forms part of the Chester Dale Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
