A beautiful pair of antique English papier-mâché letter stands dating to the early 19th century. Each with shaped divisions decorated with hand-painted architectural landscapes and exotic birds, surrounded by intricate gilt foliate decoration and mother-of-pearl inlay. Finished in the traditional black japanned manner and raised on shaped bases. A lovely surviving pair from the height of English decorative papier-mâché production, originally designed for holding letters and correspondence. Wear, crazing and losses to the decoration consistent with age and use. Circa 1830s-40s. Sold as a pair.
