Charming late 18th century silk embroidered portrait depicting a young girl carrying a basket of flowers within a pastoral landscape. Finely worked in coloured silk threads on a painted ground, the figure is shown in period dress and presented within an oval brass frame. Executed in the Georgian period, the work combines embroidery and painted elements in a manner popular during the late 1700s. The embroidery displays age-related fading, discolouration and wear consistent with its age, while the brass frame and backing show associated signs of age and handling. The reverse bears later handwritten annotations, likely added by a previous owner or collector. A beautiful example of Georgian decorative needlework and a lovely addition to a collection of antique textiles, miniature artworks or period decorative objects.
