A fine quality and beautifully proportioned English Aesthetic Movement centre table dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1880–1890. Beautifully crafted, featuring a richly figured rosewood top above a hand-inlaid marquetry frieze decorated with stylised floral and scrolling foliate motifs, reflecting the elegant Japanese-inspired influence that became synonymous with the Aesthetic Movement. Raised on four clusters of turned legs each with ebonised spindle galleries, the table is united by a stretcher base also with hand-inlaid marquetry and central finial of turned timber. The underside retains its original brass workshop plate stamped “E & Co BW 1752". The craftsmanship throughout is of a particularly high standard, with traditional period construction and carefully executed marquetry; a detail rarely found on more ordinary centre tables of similar age and aesthetic taste.
This table is the perfect size to work equally beautifully as a centre table in an entrance or as an occasional table in a library, sitting room or large bedroom.
In original condition with a wonderful patina. There are age-related marks, minor losses and wear to sections of the marquetry, along with minor shrinkage and surface wear consistent with its age and use, all of which contribute to its authentic late Victorian character.
