An impressive late 19th century English Aesthetic Movement sideboard with strong Anglo-Japanese influence, crafted in ebonised timber with extensive bevelled glass and brass detailing. The architectural form features a central pair of bevelled glass cupboard doors above an open serving recess, flanked by raised side cupboards and open galleries. The outer doors incorporate geometric arrangements of bevelled glass surrounding hand-painted gilt panels depicting birds amongst flowering branches, characteristic of the Japanese influence seen throughout Aesthetic Movement furniture of the period. Decorative brass strap hinges, escutcheons and drop handles feature throughout, with the hinges stamped “Hodges’ Patent Lock Joint”. Further details include mirrored gallery backs, turned supports and feet, carved and incised geometric decoration and a pair of upper drawers. Circa 1880. Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Surface marks, scratches and rubbing to the ebonised finish throughout, with age and foxing to the mirrors and general wear to the brass fittings. One section of mirror is missing from the upper right-hand gallery, with losses to some of the timber detailing on the right-hand cupboard door. Please refer to photographs for overall condition.
