A beautiful pair of original hand painted decorative cherubs, created by an Australian artist on vintage board, with each figure individually cut to shape. Inspired by the winged putti and celestial musicians found in European Renaissance and Baroque art, the cherubs are depicted in flight, playing lute-style stringed instruments, with their feathered wings outstretched and rich red drapery flowing behind them. Reminiscent of the painted cherubs found in old European churches, particularly those decorating elaborate altarpieces, chapel ceilings and ecclesiastical interiors, the pair also recalls traditional Victorian Christmas imagery. The expressive faces, muted colours and painterly finish give them the appearance of old European religious decorations. Designed to be displayed together, they would look beautiful mounted above a doorway, fireplace or as part of a traditional Christmas display. Hand painted on vintage board, with minor irregularities and wear consistent with the materials used. A matching pair of hand painted trumpet-playing cherubs is also available in a separate listing. Sold as a pair.
