An unusual carved timber figure of a recumbent stag, depicted resting with its legs folded beneath its body and head gently lowered, crowned with a magnificent pair of natural antlers. Reminiscent of traditional European Black Forest animal carvings and the decorative hunting lodge furnishings popular during the 19th century, the figure features a beautifully aged timber surface, with carved facial features, finely detailed ears and a naturalistic reclining pose. The contrast between the dark timber and metallic antlers gives the piece a wonderful sculptural quality. A distinctive decorative object for a library, mantelpiece, console table or country house interior. The timber displays considerable wear consistent with age and use, including surface marks, variations in colour and visible cracks to the body, all contributing to its aged character.
